The Boston Red Sox made a notable trade during a forgettable COVID season in 2020. They acquired Nick Pivetta from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman.
Connor Seabold also came to the Red Sox to make his MLB debut in that deal before another trade sent him to the Colorado Rockies. Now, the 29-year-old right-hander is back in the American League East on a reported deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Seabold returns to the United States after playing in the KBO for the 2024 season with the Samsung Lions in one of his better professional seasons. He logged 160 innings with a 3.43 ERA in 28 starts. That’s solid progress as the right-hander struggled to put it all together for the Red Sox and Rockies across parts of three MLB seasons.
The trade could be totally off Boston’s mind soon as the other half of the return in Pivetta remains on the free-agent market among starting pitchers. The Red Sox are set to earn a compensatory draft pick if Pivetta signs elsewhere after they extended the qualifying offer to the veteran starter at the beginning of the offseason.
