The Boston Red Sox and multiple other teams waited things out with two Scott Boras clients, and one of them reportedly decided on a club Wednesday.

According to multiple reports, the New York Mets retained Pete Alonso. The first baseman agreed to a two-year, $54 million deal that includes an opt-out after the first season. It ended a long stalemate between the sides after the four-time All-Star flirted with leaving the Big Apple after six seasons.

One notable team that was “advancing” in talks with Alonso was the Blue Jays. Toronto missed out on another high-profile free agent and failed to upgrade its roster outside of signing Anthony Santander. The Jays reportedly were “more in” on Alonso than Alex Bregman, but after Wednesday, they could pivot to the two-time World Series champion.

Toronto reportedly has been one of the “most aggressive” teams trying to court Bregman. It’s unknown if it is one of the teams that offered a six-year deal to Bregman, but if they are, the Blue Jays might not be that high on the 30-year-old’s shortlist.

Still, more competition wouldn’t be great for the Red Sox, especially since it seemed like the Houston Astros resigned themselves from negotiations after their talks heated up with the Gold Glove infielder.

The Blue Jays need to do something to satisfy fans and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and signing Bregman would check off those desires. The Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers are the other known suitors for the star infielder’s services, and there could be more action in his market after Alonso decided on his team.
