Rafael Devers hoped the Red Sox would improve their roster this offseason, and that’s exactly what Craig Breslow and company accomplished.
One of the most impactful additions was veteran infielder Alex Bregman, who signed a three-year deal with the team reportedly worth $120 million. A two-time World Series champion, Bregman was one of the top free agents available this offseason.
Devers referred to him as a “great addition.”
“I think he’s a great guy,” Devers told reporters through a translator Monday, as seen on NESN. “I’ve had the opportunity to speak to him. He hasn’t been here long, but we’ve chatted. He’s experienced, he knows what he’s doing and he’s a great addition to our team.”
Boston’s trade for starting pitcher Garrett Crochet and signing of Walker Buehler, among others, also sat well with Devers.

“Honestly, I think we have a hell of a team,” he said. “I’m grateful to ownership for the moves that they made, the pieces that they added. I’m really happy and ready to get going. I’m excited about what we have.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora’s job now will be to decide who best suits the roster, and at what position. Cora has stressed there will be competition this spring with the end result a product of Boston’s best roster construction.
More Red Sox
Bregman expressed a willingness to play wherever Cora and the Red Sox want him. A move to second base, specifically, would allow Devers to remain at his preferred position of third base.
