The Boston Red Sox completed a highly productive offseason Wednesday night with the reported splash move of Alex Bregman agreeing to a three-year deal.

The long process that brought Bregman to Boston spans back to a report nearly five months ago that sparked plenty of head-scratching that became reality. The Red Sox initially got linked to Bregman with the idea of trickle-down roster manipulations in September in a column for The Athletic by Ken Rosenthal. That story planted the seeds of paying attention to an intriguing offseason race.

The lede at the time centered around the need for a right-handed bat to dominate at Fenway Park and balance a left-handed heavy Red Sox lineup. Obviously, that makes sense after assessing roster needs and seeing how free agency played out. It even made sense at the end of the regular season. Boston certainly waited out the market, but it led to the addition of an impact player and a two-time World Series champion to set the tone for the Red Sox in 2025.

Rosenthal’s proposal seemed to have come out of nowhere just a few months ago. Now, it’s the move that came to life and turned the Red Sox into legitimate American League East contenders in 2025.
