The Boston Red Sox continue to explore the market for a right-handed bat, but they face steep competition for one All-Star third baseman.
Boston reportedly prefers to sign Alex Bregman. However, the 30-year-old reportedly is committed to signing a long-term deal and neither of the other suitors in his market have been able to meet his demands.
Nolan Arenado is a backup plan of sorts for the Red Sox since the Gold Glove third baseman reportedly is willing to waive his no-trade clause to play at Fenway Park. That’s why they’ve “reengaged” in trade talks with the St. Louis Cardinals, according to John Denton of MLB.com. The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers also are part of those discussions, so chief baseball officer Craig Breslow will need to come up with a strong offer.
The Cardinals are willing to part ways with the 33-year-old. However, the $21 million he’s set to make this year seems to be a deterrent for interested teams. The renewed trade talks might mean St. Louis is willing to compromise and pay part of Arenado’s contract.
Arenado would be an intriguing fit as opposed to Bregman since Arenado doesn’t have experience playing a position outside of third base at the major league level. Manager Alex Cora would find a way to make it work as Arenado would give the Red Sox the right-handed bat they need to round out the lineup.
