Alex Bregman apparently caught the Red Sox off guard.

When Red Sox brass traveled to California in mid-November to meet with Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras, the two-time World Series champion understandably had questions for them. But Bregman’s curiosity about Boston’s farm system, players who might not be on the Opening Day roster, reportedly created a major talking point.

“That was somewhat unexpected,” a Red Sox executive told WEEI’s Rob Bradford.

Top prospects including Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer were all brought up by Bregman.

“That surprised some, but also made the Sox’s brass feel like this line of questioning might be a feather in their cap,” Bradford wrote.

Bregman ultimately signed with the Red Sox on a three-year deal reportedly worth $120 million, including opt-outs after each of the first two years.

The two-time MLB All-Star was introduced in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday and mentioned how the future of the ballclub — which aligns with those top prospects — was a key factor in his decision. He confirmed Boston’s future was his main question during free agency.

“After talking with some of the guys over the last two days, I can see that there’s something special here, franchise players, veteran players, young players, all ready to get after it,” Bregman said.

Those top prospects will have a front-row seat to watch Bregman in spring training, especially with their lockers next to each other in the clubhouse.
