Current members of the Red Sox weren’t the only ones working hard this offseason trying to bring Alex Bregman to Boston.

Trevor Story on Saturday explained how he recruited Bregman “pretty hard,” and the two now are set to share an infield for a Red Sox team with legitimate postseason aspirations. At his introductory press conference Sunday, Bregman was asked if any other Boston players — past or present — reached out to him while he was on the open market.

“My favorite player, Dustin Pedroia, did,” Bregman told reporters, as seen on NESN. “He reached out a few times this offseason and talked to me about how special it was to be a part of the Boston Red Sox. It was pretty cool to talk to him as well as so many other former players here in Boston and current players on the team as well. So, it was great.”

Pedroia’s status as Bregman’s “favorite player” shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. It’s very easy to rattle off similarities between the two, and manager Alex Cora recently did so when he labeled both Bregman and Pedroia as “baseball rats.”

Arguably Pedroia’s greatest attribute over the course of his 14-year career in Boston was bringing an unmatched effort level to the ballpark every gameday. It sure seems like the Red Sox will benefit from a similar quality in Bregman.
