Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is bound for MLB free agency, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s eager to find a new home.
Guerrero’s ticket to the open market effectively was punched Monday night when the superstar slugger and the Toronto Blue Jays failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension. The 25-year-old has no plans to negotiate a new deal in-season, so he’s set to become the most coveted player available after the 2025 campaign ends.
The four-time All-Star made it clear to the Blue Jays on Tuesday that the organization now will have to compete with the rest of the league to retain his services. However, Guerrero is holding onto hope he can find common ground with Toronto come November.
“I will do anything, everything I can to stay here because I want to be here,” Guerrero told reporters, per MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.
The Blue Jays probably will put up a fair fight in the upcoming Guerrero sweepstakes. After all, Toronto reportedly made significant offers to both Juan Soto and Boston Red Sox newcomer Alex Bregman this offseason. Of course, Toronto failed to land either of those superstars and very well could suffer a similar fate with their homegrown stud.

For what it’s worth, one of MLB’s top insiders did not mention the Blue Jays when he listed the early favorites to sign Guerrero.
