The Red Sox aren’t done, are they?
Boston made what likely is one final splash this offseason, reportedly agreeing to a three-year deal with Alex Bregman on Wednesday.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow previously was adamant about remaining in the hunt for both a right-handed bat and more bullpen pieces — with the splash signing satisfying only the former. Bregman is good, but he isn’t providing innings out of the bullpen.
Breslow should remain focused on acquiring these five players, several who could round things out for Boston:
RHP Héctor Neris
Neris, 35, is a former teammate of Bregman’s, spending parts of the last three seasons with the Houston Astros. The Chicago Cubs signed him away at the start of last season, but ultimately released him before he returned for one more postseason run with Houston.

Boston should look to be the next stop on his baseball journey, as there are still some quality innings left in his right arm. Neris saw his ERA (4.10) balloon in 2024, but the previous three seasons saw him combine for a 3.03 mark in 208 innings. It’s worth a flier.
RHP Joe Kelly
Kelly, 36, made that infamous pouty face (you know the one) just a couple of pitches after throwing behind Bregman’s head in 2020. Time heals all wounds, though, right? Kelly is an extremely up-and-down pitcher but has shown an ability to provide value in high-leverage situations. Again, it’s worth a flier.
RHP Robert Suárez
Suárez, 33, is still under contract in San Diego but reportedly is the most probable player to be traded away as the organization looks to shed payroll. The Padres called on him to close games — even after acquiring Tanner Scott — to the tune of a combined 2.89 ERA over the last three seasons.
The Red Sox wouldn’t have to give up an insane package, either, as he can opt out of his contract after this upcoming season.

C Christian Vázquez
Vázquez, 34, is still under contract with Minnesota, but they appear ready for a fire sale. The Red Sox should strongly consider picking him up for nothing, as all it will cost is the money he’s currently owed.
RHP David Robertson
Robertson, 39, is the most readily available option to be added to the backend of the bullpen, as he had a 3.00 ERA across 68 appearances last season for the Texas Rangers. It’s kind of ridiculous how good he is as an old man, so why not see if you can become the next team to benefit?
