The Boston Red Sox once selected a high school infielder named Alex Bregman in the 2012 MLB Draft.

The then-29th-round pick opted not to sign with the Red Sox in favor of playing college baseball at LSU. That decision more than paid off for Bregman when the Houston Astros selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft.

Bregman rose with core players Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa to start a dynastic run through the American League with four pennants and two World Series championships in eight seasons with Houston. He became one of the elite third basemen in the sport and chose to test free agency after nine MLB seasons.

That long and drawn-out free-agent process led him back to the team that originally drafted him 13 years ago when Bregman and the Red Sox reportedly reached an agreement on a three-year deal Wednesday night.

The deal puts a massive bow on a productive offseason that drastically improved the Red Sox and put Boston back in serious contention to win the American League East for the first time in seven seasons. From taking pressure off elite prospects to balancing an already talented lineup, Bregman’s impact is immediate for the Red Sox.
