Much has already been made about Alex Bregman’s off-field impact on the Red Sox, especially when it comes to his younger teammates. What might surprise some, though, is that’s a two-way street.
Bregman has taken some of Boston’s top prospects — like Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell — under his wing in his first spring training with the Red Sox. In some instances, Bregman imparts his wisdom on the youngster. But as Anthony recently revealed, Bregman is getting something out of it, too.
“It’s awesome, and it’s even more awesome when a guy like Alex Bregman comes up to me and is picking my brain and asking me questions and is wanting to get to know me,” Anthony told Worcester Red Sox broadcaster Cooper Boardman, as seen in a video shared to X by Boardman.
“We look at it sometimes and see these guys on TV, and it’s like, wow, these guys are like celebrities almost in a sense. Then you realize talking to them they’re just like me. He wants to win, he’s a competitor, he wants to learn. We have so many similarities. He’s a normal person, right? That’s the biggest thing. That’s the funniest part. Talking to him, it’s been awesome, and I’ve just learned so much from him in the short span he’s been here.”
That’s not exactly a surprising revelation. Bregman recently lauded Anthony for his maturity, particularly as a 20-year-old, insisting he believes the outfielder will be an “elite, elite hitter” in the majors. If that’s the case, why wouldn’t Bregman, even with his accolades, try to learn something from Anthony?

Still, it speaks both to Bregman’s willingness to be a good teammate and also shows he’s always looking for ways to improve. It’s the sorts of things that make Alex Cora believe Bregman is the perfect addition for the Red Sox, especially as they look to ascend.
Whether Anthony and Bregman are teammates when the season opens March 27 in Texas remains to be seen. If Wyler Abreu isn’t 100% by then, Anthony may break camp with the big club. However, the red-hot spring training performance from Trayce Thompson could mean Anthony begins the year in Worcester. Given all we know and hear about the top prospect, though, that probably won’t be a long stay in Triple-A.
