The Boston Red Sox have a path that could finally bring up another top prospect in the organization.
Kristian Campbell got “introduced” to first base before Friday’s game, which, if he makes that transition, allows for an opening at second base. That role should absolutely go to top infield prospect Marcelo Mayer.
Mayer and Roman Anthony are running circles around the opposition in Triple-A Worcester while they patiently wait for their well-deserved calls to the show. Based on the positional trends that appear to be in motion for the Red Sox, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal made a prediction on which top prospect gets promoted first during Saturday’s FOX broadcast of Boston’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
“It becomes very interesting if he can handle that position,” Rosenthal said at Fenway Park. “That would initially open second base for David Hamilton. He’s a great athlete, good defender. Kristian Campbell’s metrics at second base are not very good. Then, you have a spot open for Marcelo Mayer, who resumed playing second base at Triple-A. You could start to see these guys come up, Mayer in particular, then maybe Roman Anthony to follow.”
FOX analyst and Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz preceded Rosenthal’s note that it can be hard to develop three young players in Campbell, Anthony and Mayer while trying to compete at that level in the same season.

“(If you’re not) in the mix, then you do it absolutely and you start developing those young players at the big-league level,” Smoltz said on the broadcast.
Mayer and Anthony do have roles they can play to boost the Red Sox out of another .500 lull through six weeks and the clock is ticking in terms of the urgency needed to finally bring them to Boston. It’s a spark that could finally ignite a hot streak.
