Alex Bregman is on the verge of a key milestone following a hot start to his Red Sox career.
The Boston third baseman reached 199 career home runs after he went yard last Friday. That means when he hits his next homer, he’ll become the 319th player in MLB history to hit 200 dingers.
Bregman joining the 200-home run club in his 10th MLB season shows how strong of a start his Red Sox run was. He’s up to eight homers and 27 RBIs in 36 games with a .973 OPS. If the season ended Wednesday, he would achieve a career high in batting average (.315) and his on-base and slugging percentages would be his best since 2019, when he finished second in American League MVP voting.
The 31-year-old isn’t in the MVP conversation this season, but he’s been one of Boston’s most reliable hitters, especially when Rafael Devers started the season slowly. Manager Alex Cora knows he doesn’t have to worry about Bregman, but he could share a special moment with the Gold Glove infielder when he hits home run No. 200.
Bregman will hope to do so Wednesday against Tyler Mahle and the Texas Rangers. First pitch for the matchup is scheduled at 6:45 p.m. ET, and you can catch full coverage on NESN after an hour of pregame.
