Noah Song has long been a fascinating Red Sox prospect, and the right-handed pitcher is ready to take a huge step in his baseball career.

Song is scheduled to take the mound for the Florida Complex League Red Sox against the FCL Orioles on Tuesday. It’s a temporary move before he eventually moves to Double-A Portland.

“It’s been a long road,” Song told The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier. “I’m grateful that I just get to really only have one thing to truly worry about.”

It’s slightly unusual for a player of Song’s age — he turns 28 on May 28 — to pitch in Double-A. But the 2019 draft pick is coming off Tommy John surgery and finished his commitment to the Navy in 2022. Tuesday began the start of a normal path to a baseball career for the right-hander.

“He really hasn’t had a normal development path … His is certainly unique. (But) as an organization, you want to see things through,” Red Sox farm director Brian Abraham told The Boston Globe. “You put bets on people, too — not just the player. And I think that’s what we wanted to do with Noah. The character, the work ethic, on top of the potential to have upper-levels stuff and hopefully major league stuff at some point, I think led us to a point where we want to take a chance on the kid.”

Song, who was drafted in the Rule 5 draft in 2022 by Philadelphia before being returned, owns a 3.81 ERA in 49 2/3 innings in his two-year minor league career, and he’ll hope to make an impact in Boston’s farm system and fulfill his baseball dreams.
