After being ejected in the 11th inning against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night, Red Sox manager Alex Cora stood by his argument.
Romy Gonzalez stepped up to the plate with one out and two men on base. Facing a full count against Ian Seymour, Gonzalez didn’t swing at a fastball that looked to be low on the plate. As the infielder started to make his way to first base, the home plate umpire Junior Valentine called it a strike.
Gonzalez was quick to argue the call, and so was Cora. As the manager ran out of the dugout, Valentine ejected Cora.
“It was a ball,” Cora told reporters after the 10-8 loss, as seen on NESN. “That pitch was a ball. It was down. He was really good actually, during the day, but it was down.”
Gonzalez entered the game in the sixth inning when he pinch hit for Marcelo Mayer. He ripped a game-tying double in the sixth and slapped a single in the bottom of the ninth.
