The Boston Red Sox are currently six games back of the New York Yankees for the first place lead in the American League East. Following a sweep of the Yankees at Fenway Park last weekend, the Red Sox have gone 3-3 over the last six games.
While the Red Sox continue to get healthier, the Yankees starting rotation continues to get hit hard with injuries this season. The team placed right hander Luis Gil on the 60-day injured list on March 24 with a right lat strain. He was followed by fellow right hander Marcus Stroman, who was placed on the 15-day IL on April 15 with left knee inflammation.
On Sunday, the Yankees placed left-hander Ryan Yarbrough on the 15-day IL (retroactive to June 20) with a right oblique strain. The southpaw started to experience discomfort during his first of two starts against the Red Sox on June 7. He would earn a loss after pitching four innings in the Red Sox 10-7 victory.
Yarbrough was 3-1 with a 3.90 ERA in 16 games (eight starts) before being sidelined on Sunday. The Yankees recalled left hander Jayvien Sandridge from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.
That being said, the Yankees’ rotation’s most substantial injury loss occurred prior to the 2025 season when staff ace Gerrit Cole was diagnosed with a right elbow ligament tear and was placed on the 60-day IL. Cole underwent Tommy John surgery on March 11 and will miss the entire season recovering from the procedure.
