Hunter Dobbins has only been in the Major Leagues a few months, but he’s already making major waves.
The Boston Red Sox rookie has shined on the mound, going 3-1 with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP over his first 49 1/3 innings since debuting in April. He’s also provided some much-needed stability for a rotation that’s been plagued by injuries and inconsistency.
However, it’s his performance off the field that’s been getting more attention lately.
During last weekend’s series against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, Dobbins fanned the flames of the iconic rivalry with some choice words before his first career start against the Yankees on Sunday.
“I’ve said it before, that if the Yankees were the last team to give me a contract, I’d retire,” Dobbins said, revealing his apparent disdain for the pinstripes.

Not surprisingly, the 25-year-old’s quote ruffled some feathers in the Bronx and went viral before Sunday night’s contest, which Boston won 11-7. Dobbins earned his first win since April 18, allowing three runs on four hits (including two home runs) over five innings.
When NESN sideline reporter Jahmai Webster asked Dobbins about the quote during Monday’s home game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the talented young right-hander doubled down on his bold statement.
“I just love being a Red Sox. I lean into what I said,” Dobbins said from the dugout.
While Dobbins is originally from Texas, his Boston fandom runs deep. His dad, Lance, was a pitcher and a Red Sox fan — two traits he passed down to his son.

Dobbins will likely face New York again when the Yankees visit Fenway Park this weekend, giving him another chance to back up his original comments and keep their dangerous lineup at bay.
Fans can only imagine what he’ll say if he delivers.
