The Boston Red Sox are looking to earn their fifth-straight series victory on Sunday as they take on Rafael Devers and the San Francisco Giants. However, their Double-A affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs, drew some attention for a spectacular feat in their game on Sunday afternoon.

The Sea Dogs finished off a six-game set against the Akron RubberDucks in impressive fashion, as their pitching staff fired a combined no-hitter to split the series with three wins apiece.

Leading the charge for Portland was David Sandlin, the No. 9 prospect in the Red Sox farm system. Sandlin twirled six innings of no-hit ball, giving up just three walks while striking out nine batters along the way.

Christopher Troye was called on in relief of Sandlin, and he pitched two hitless innings, giving up a pair of walks along the way. That set the stage for Jonathan Brand, who gave up a walk but struck out two batters to secure the combined no-hitter for Boston.

The main thing the Red Sox front office will be looking at is Sandlin’s performance, as they will be hoping this outing can spring him into the next stage of his development. With this stellar outing, Sandlin dropped his ERA to 3.90 on the season, while also picking up his fourth win.

Considering how he’s already 24 years old, the clock is ticking when it comes to Sandlin and his quest to find his way to the majors. His upside is clear as day, but he needs to become more consistent if he intends on making the move up to Triple-A.

The good news is that even before this outing, Sandlin had shown improvement this season. After initially struggling with Portland last year, posting a 5.61 ERA in eight starts, he has been much more effective this season, which has culminated in this dominant start.

While some Boston fans are lamenting the prospect return in the Devers trade, it’s worth remembering that there is still a solid crop of players headlining the team’s farm system. And if Sandlin can build off this outing, he could earn himself a promotion in the near future.
