The Chicago Bears fired Matt Eberflus on Friday, according to multiple reports
Eberflus went 14-32 in his two-plus seasons in the Windy City, and it marked the first time in franchise history the Bears fired a head coach midseason. The reported decision came after Chicago failed to call a timeout in the final seconds of its Thanksgiving loss to the Detroit Lions. The Bears fell to 4-8 after Thursday, comfortable last place in the NFC North, which could contain three playoff teams.
Thomas Brown, who replaced Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator after the loss to the New England Patriots, will be the interim head coach.
The New York Jets and New Orleans Saints are the two other teams with head-coaching vacancies, and there would be more on the fateful “Black Monday,” the day after the end of the regular season.
Bill Belichick took a season off to jumpstart his media career. While the former Patriots head coach has been a delight on television, it would be a shock if he called it quits. Chicago could be a place that calls his number.

Belichick has a lot of respect for Bears legends like George Halas and Walter Payton. They have a strong defense, and the future Hall of Fame head coach could be the structure that Caleb Williams needs in his young career.
New England doesn’t play Chicago again until the 2026 season, but the Bears could be a team to watch out for as a potential Belichick destination.
