Juan Soto made the move of the MLB offseason when he signed the largest contract in sports history with the New York Mets.
Owner Steve Cohen shelled out a 15-year deal for $765 million in historic fashion for the generational hitter. Teams such as Soto’s former team, the New York Yankees, along with the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers, also competed in the race.
The Yankees reportedly made a similar offer that Soto passed up in favor of moving from The Bronx to Queens. The American League team from New York did quickly pivot and sign starting pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year deal for $218 million.
The Yankees became a popular conversation topic at Soto’s introductory press conference Thursday afternoon, which sparked quite the comedic response from Soto’s agent Scott Boras.
“First of all, when you’re at a wedding, you don’t talk about the bridesmaids,” Boras told reporters, per SNY. “I’m not here to address why or why not. I’ve been waiting a long time for Juan and the group to send me the signal of who I can close with and work out the final details.”
