New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto (and his agent Scott Boras) appear to be doing some damage control.
Soto, who agreed to the largest contract in baseball history this week, was officially introduced at Citi Field on Thursday. Mets owner Steve Cohen, general manager David Stearns and agent Scott Boras were all on hand, with big ole smiles on their faces, but the 26-year-old lost his before making a relatively shocking announcement.
“I haven’t talked to any of those guys,” Soto said, responding to a question regarding his relationship with the New York Yankees. “(I) talked to them throughout the playoffs, but after that, I haven’t talked to any of them.”
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale provided some insight on Friday. It’s up to you whether or not you want to believe it.
“The reason there was no communication between Juan Soto and his former Yankee teammates simply is that Soto changed his cell phone number,” Nightengale posted on X. “He was bombarded by outside calls during his free agency and wanted privacy. Soto now is reaching out to former Yankee teammates.”
