Some of the Boston Red Sox’s brightest stars wouldn’t be participating in the World Baseball Classic in March. Boston’s chief baseball officer Craig Breslow revealed on Monday that Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony are not playing.
The Red Sox won’t be completely without representation in the WBC, however.
According to The Boston Globe‘s Tim Healey, two-time Gold Glove right fielder Wilyer Abreu plans to play in the WBC for Venezuela.
Abreu slashed .247/ .317/ .469 in his second full MLB season with 22 home runs and 69 RBI over 115 games, pacing the team in long balls for much of the year before Trevor Story surged late. A calf strain in August took away a lot of games from Abreu in 2025, but his defensive prowess earned a second straight Gold Glove in right field, anchoring Boston’s outfield during their AL Wild Card push.

Since his 2023 debut, the 26-year-old Venezuelan has blossomed into one of baseball’s most promising young outfielders, posting a .256 average with 39 homers and 141 RBI across 275 games—all with Boston. Abreu is also fresh off clinching the Venezuelan Home Run Derby with 44 blasts on December 1. Red Sox fans now have another reason to tune in to the WBC.
