While some are insisting there is a new curse on the Red Sox after their collapse last month, perhaps the most famous piece of memorabilia from their last curse is about to be sold.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the 1986 World Series, Seth Swirsky, the owner of the ball Mookie Wilson hit past Bill Buckner, will put the ball up for auction.
Swirsky, who purchased the ball from Charlie Sheen back in 2000, is a Grammy-nominated songwriter. He will put the ball up for auction on eBay on Oct. 15 and plans on closing the bidding on Oct. 25, the exact anniversary of Game 6.
The asking price for the ball has been set at $1 million.
The songwriter said he decided to put the ball up for sale the day after watching Boston lose its regular-season finale, yet insists he has nothing against the Red Sox.
"I wasn't in a gloating mood," Swirsky said. "This isn't about, 'Ha, ha, the Red Sox lost.' I'm not a Red Sox hater, I'm a baseball history lover."
Swirsky, nominated for a Grammy in 1988 for co-writing the track "Tell It To My Heart" by Taylor Dayne, also owns merchandise from players like Joe Jackson, Johnny Vander Meer and Eddie Gaedel. He also said he plans on donating part of the proceeds to the Baseball Assistance Team.
"Everybody knows where they were when that play happened," Swirsky said. "To me, it encompasses the two emotions of the game. The highs and lows, all encapsulated in one ball."
