The 6-foot-5, 319-pound prospect played left tackle at Iowa but projects to guard in the NFL — much like former Patriots first-round pick Logan Mankins. Scherff currently is projected as one of the first offensive linemen off the board, but things can change before late April.
Scherff is a best-case scenario for the Patriots, who need help at guard and could use insurance for Nate Solder and Sebastian Vollmer at tackle. The Patriots need to find a replacement for Mankins, and Scherff can absolutely be that guy.
The Patriots met with Scherff at the combine.
