Lance Moves Into Second in Tour Behind Contador

Lance Armstrong moved into second place in the Tour de France on Sunday, but will unlikely be able to move into first as Alberto Contador now holds a commanding lead with the race in the Alps.

Armstrong moved up from fourth place in the standings but lost time to his teammate Contador, who now holds the lead by one minute and 37 seconds. Contador won the event in 2007 and after taking the overall lead, he was able to put on the yellow jersey for the first time since his title two years ago.

"I'm very happy with this result. The climb wasn't that long, but I wanted to make a difference," Contador told the Associated Press. "I gave the maximum."

Contador broke away from the pack with 3.5 miles left in the 128.9-mile ride from Pontarlier, France, to the Swiss ski resort of Verbier. He entered Sunday's stage in third place, trailing Rinaldo Nocentini by six seconds. Nocentini had led the race for eight days, but Contador finished in 5 hours, 3 minutes, 58 seconds to overtake him.
