Longoria out of All-Star Game with Finger Infection

The finger infection that was supposed to limit Evan Longoria to just one at-bat will keep him out of the game entirely, MLB.com reports.

Michael Young, who was on the roster as a reserve, will slide into the starting spot at third base, while the Angels’ Chone Figgins will take Longoria’s spot on the roster.

Young will be making his first All-Star start, while Figgins will be making his first All-Star appearance.

Longoria discovered an infection in his right ring finger and had it drained and treated with antibiotics on Monday, TampaBay.com reports.

“I don’t know what it was,” Longoria told the Web site
on Monday. “I don’t know if I had a hang nail or an ingrown nail or
something; I just got a little infection on the tip, and it just kind
of worsened. … I was just worried because I had a little swollen gland
in my elbow that kind of triggered it. So I had to go get it checked
out. It was nothing serious, they just kind of slit it open a little
bit to see if there was anything in there.”

AL manager Joe Maddon had the benefit of
influencing the decision on Longoria, opting to leave his 23-year-old
budding superstar on the bench so that he can return to the team on
Friday.
