Wakefield to Make Triple-A Start Friday, Could Join Rotation Next Week

The Red Sox, who had far too many arms in the rotation not too long ago, are quickly running out of pitching options — which means it's the perfect time for Tim Wakefield to make his return.

The All-Star — who has been on the disabled list since July 21 with a strained lower back — will start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, with battery-mate George Kottaras behind the plate. If all goes well, the 43-year-old knuckleballer could be back in Boston's rotation by next week.

Wakefield has spent 15 of his 17 major league seasons with the Red Sox. In 17 starts in 2009, he has compiled an 11-3 record with a 4.31 ERA.
