Two years ago, he delivered salvation to New York and heartbreak to New England. In an image that still haunts the minds of Patriots fans nationwide, he hauled in what was essentially the game-winning catch in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII.
Now, he's jobless.
According to ESPN.com, the Giants severed ties with wide receiver David Tyree on Saturday.
"I talked to [assistant GM] Kevin Abrams this morning and he said it was a very tough decision for the team," Tyree's agent, Michael Clouser, told The Newark Star-Ledger. "Like anyone else, it was a tough thing for David to hear. He's actually saying his goodbyes to his teammates right now."
Tyree, 29, has not played since the 2007 season due to a series of leg injuries. He registered just four catches during the 2007 season, three of which came during the Super Bowl against New England. He was drafted by New York in the sixth round of the 2003 draft.
The receiver houses no bitterness toward the franchise he has spent his entire career with.
"What a joy it was to be a part of something so great from Day 1," he told the Star-Ledger. "My experience there has been nothing short of a dream…. To be placed in team history and sports history, where do you go from here? But at the same time, my love for this game hasn't died out yet and I really still feel I have something great to add onto my career and legacy."
In 73 career games, Tyree has registered 54 receptions for 650 yards and four touchdowns. He has started in just five games.
