Taft Defeats Avon in First Game Played on Fenway Park Ice

If the Bruins are looking for tips on the layout of the Fenway Park ice, they're going to have to ask a group of teenagers.

That's because on Monday, Avon Old Farms took on Taft at Fenway — the first hockey game played on the historic ballpark's infield. Taft took the high-scoring affair 9-5.

"We had a lot of fun," Avon Old Farms coach John Gardner told the Hartford Courant. "This is
something they're going to be able to treasure for a while. Both teams were in
the spirit of the game and just having fun playing hockey."

One parent from Taft and one from Avon pitched in to pay the necessary $30,000 fee. Each parent wishes to remain anonymous. Both teams waited outside Gate E completely dressed in uniform except for their skates at 8 a.m. prior to making their way to the ice, which costs $10,000 per hour to rent.

"I think it is probably every young hockey players' dream to play pond hockey, but then to do it at Fenway Park with the NHL guys playing here later, I think it is very special for these kids," Taft coach Dan Murphy said.
