New England Revolution captain Steve Ralston will not be returning to the team in 2010.
The 14-year MLS veteran has scored 76 goals and has made 10 postseason appearances, including each of the Revolution's four MLS Cup appearances in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Ralston joined New England in 2002 after six years with the Tampa Bay Mutiny.
Ralston is the MLS all-time career leader in assists (135), appearances (378), starts (372) and minutes played (33,143). His 2009 season ended when he tore his ACL on Sept. 26 against Seattle.
The Revolution has released the following statement concerning Ralston:
“Steve Ralston has been a tremendous player, leader and ambassador for the New England Revolution since he arrived in 2002. In eight years with us, Steve has been a central figure in lifting the team to new heights of success. While we wish we were welcoming him back on Monday when the rest of the team arrives for the start of preseason, we want to thank Steve for all of his contributions and effort on our behalf — both on the field and off the field — and wish him and his family nothing but the best in all of his future endeavors.”
