According to ESPN.com, the Dolphins will keep Porter on their roster, at least for now.
The Dolphins made the decision based on salary-cap implications. The team would have incurred a $4.8 million salary cap hit if they released Porter before March 5, the start of the league’s new year. Such a move would put the team $600,000 over the cap.
The four-time Pro Bowler has told Dolphins officials he wants to be released after a season in which he recorded nine sacks and 41 tackles.
Porter may receive his wish: The veteran is due a $1 million roster bonus on March 10. The team could simply delay his release until the new league year begins.
The Dolphins also could explore other options. They could trade Porter or attempt to make amends with their unhappy linebacker.
