David Ortiz's torrid streak in May just keeps on rolling.
Big Papi just slammed his 10th home run of the year, ninth in May. It represents a career-high for the month of May, snapping a tie with his 2008 season when he finished with 23 home runs.
Ortiz took a fastball above the belt from Matt Garza — a pitch he typically struggles with — and launched it into right field to put the Red Sox up 6-2 over the Rays as the top of the fifth wraps up. John Lackey remains on the hill for the Red Sox. He's given up six hits, three walks and two runs over four innings. Lackey has also struck out one as the Sox go for the sweep against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Adrian Beltre is responsible for the other four runs, hitting a solo shot in the second inning. The third baseman later followed that up with a three-run bomb in the third.
Ortiz is now on pace to finish 2010 with 43 home runs, which would rank third in his career behind 2005's 47 and 2006's 54 blasts. The 54 home runs are a team record, breaking Jimmie Foxx's mark of 50 for Boston in 1938.
