In a barrage of bad news, there is at least one positive for the Red Sox, as Clay Buchholz should be able to avoid a trip to the disabled list. There's a chance that Victor Martinez could as well.
The team announced Monday night that Martinez has a minimally displaced fracture on his left thumb, and he likely will not require surgery. The team said that no roster move will be made on Monday but did not rule out the possibility of one before the team plays on Tuesday night.
Buchholz, meanwhile, underwent an MRI and was diagnosed with a left hamstring strain. The team says there are no plans to place him on the DL.
The Sox also offered an update on Dustin Pedroia, who has a non-displaced fracture in his left foot and won't require surgery. The team said that the average timetable for a return from such an injury is six weeks but offered no specifics regarding Pedroia's case.
