The Dutch, stifled by a compact Denmark defense, never quite found their usual high-scoring offensive rhythm, but still managed to beat Denmark 2-0.
On a fluke, they took the lead off an own goal in the 46th minute when Denmark defender Simon Poulsen headed the ball off the back of teammate Daniel Agger and into the net.
Player of the Game
Nigel de Jong, Netherlands
His strong defensive performance helped control the game, keeping the Danes’ offense at bay.
Scoring breakdown
Besides the Poulsen own goal, Netherlands striker Dirk Kuyt kicked in a rebound off the post from close range in the 85th minute to double the Dutch lead.
Notes
Both coaches shook up their lineups. Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk put Arjen Robben on the bench after previously ruling him out of the game with a hamstring injury, and Denmark coach Morten Olsen started forward Nicklas Bendtner after saying he would almost definitely miss the game with a groin injury.
