Report: Zack Greinke Available, and Yankees Could Be Interested

The Yankees might add another ace.

Besides being interested in Diamondbacks right-hander Dan Haren, the pinstripes also could be enterering the conversation for Royals right-hander Zack Greinke, the New York Post reports.

Kansas City is not excluding any of its players from trade talks, and that’s music to Yankees’ ears.
After narrowly missing out on Cliff Lee and losing Andy Pettitte (11-2, 2.88 ERA) to a groin injury for four to five weeks, the Yanks still have a spot in their starting rotation to upgrade. Though general manager Brian Cashman reportedly is fine with allowing Sergio Mitre to fill Pettitte’s spot, Cashman hasn’t stopped looking at other starters, either.

Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young winner, has an above-average 3.59 ERA and a spectacular 113 strikeouts. His 6-9 record is mostly thanks to little run support. He opened the season a dreadful 1-8, but received three runs or less in six of his losses. Since June 14, however, Greinke is 5-1.

The Royals, who are modeling their future after the Rays and Twins and aim to build an even stronger farm system, would likely take either MLB-ready players or prospects. The Yankees have reportedly offered impressive pitching prospects Ivan Nova and Zach McAllister to Arizona for Haren, and could likely entice Kansas City with a similar offer.
