Computer Simulation Predicts Patriots Win Division, Packers Win Super Bowl

The computers have spoken, and it looks like the Vince Lombardi Trophy will return to where the legendary coach himself won five NFL Championships.

According to Whatifsports.com’s NFL simulation engine, the Green Bay Packers are poised to win this year’s Super Bowl, defeating the San Diego Chargers in Arlington, Texas.

The projections are hypothetical computer simulations based on "statistical outputs of players and teams from the 2009 season." Of course, they have no bearing whatsoever on the upcoming NFL season, and may even be a waste of time. But it’s always fun to see what predictions an unbiased piece of technology can provide.

According to the simulations, the Patriots will finish at 10-6 and win the AFC East with ease. The New York Jets, high expectations and all, are predicted to finish at 7-9, tied with the Buffalo Bills, while the Miami Dolphins bring up the rear at 6-10.

The Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos are expected to be the other AFC playoff teams. The Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings and Carolina Panthers will join the Pack as the NFC representatives in the postseason.

According to the simulations, though, the Patriots won’t last long come playoff time. The computers say that the Pats will fall to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round by an average score of 21-20.

In conference championship competition, the Chargers are predicted to down the Ravens and the Packers will take down the Cowboys, setting up the Packers-Chargers finale. The computers say that the final score of the big game will be 23-17, with Aaron Rodgers earning MVP honors (22-35, 300 yards, 2 TDs).
