That big furry creature is the Red Sox mascot, and he’s quite a character.
Then again, he has to be. It’s his job to pump up the crowd, entertain for a few minutes during an occasionally boring three hours and give free hugs. Without a mascot, something would be missing from a sporting event, which is why almost every professional and college team has one.
Whether it’s a real animal — the University of Georgia’s bulldog, Uga; the University of Colorado’s 1,300-pound buffalo, Ralphie; Baylor University’s twin black bears, Joy and Lady, just to name a few — or a bizarre cartoon creation in a massive suit, fans love the mascot.
And the Red Sox have one of the most unique and recognizable mascots in all of sports.
