It was a tearful farewell for Jason Varitek last Sunday at Fenway Park in Boston. Was it the last time Red Sox Nation will see him in the same uniform he’s worn for the last 14 years?
According to manager Terry Francona, who was a guest on WEEI on Thursday, it sure sounds like it.
“That’s the interesting one,” he said. “I think there has to be a time when you put your emotions aside and you talk about your team. Because if you don’t, you’re going to make mistakes. I don’t want to do that, either. I’ve been around ‘Tek for a long time, ever since I’ve been here. But I also want to continue to win. So when you go into these meetings, I think you try to recognize what they bring. At the same time, we’re going to try and put a team out there that can win and try not to make mistakes because of how hard emotions are.”
