Wednesday’s Randy Moss trade caused much heartache in New England, and rightfully so. Despite rumors of off-field problems and locker room distractions, the fact of the matter is that the Pats received just a third-round pick in 2011 for their offense’s most lethal threat and a first-ballot NFL Hall of Famer.
This trade won’t be the last blockbuster in Boston and it certainly isn’t the first — especially recently, as Boston has watched a lot of fan favorites hit the road. From Nomar Garciaparra to Phil Kessel, there have been a lot of wasted jerseys buried in fans’ attics.
In 2005, Joe Thornton, the face and future of the Bruins franchise, was shipped off to San Jose. Jumbo Joe was the NHL’s No. 1 overall pick in 1997 and the power forward was dealt for forwards Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau and defenseman Brad Stuart.
In 2008, the Red Sox had finally had enough of outfielder and 11-time All-Star, Manny Ramirez. At the trade deadline, the Sox shipped their slugger for outfielder Jason Bay via a three-team deal that saw Man-Ram end up in Los Angeles, where he hit .396 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs in the remaining 53 games of the season.
