The Four’s: Of All Players Selected Last Overall in the NHL Draft Since 1970, Which Player Has the Most Career Goals?

The NHL’s version of “Mr. Irrelevant” doesn’t receive nearly the amount hype which the NFL’s final pick in the draft gets, but that’s not to say he doesn’t have a shot at a lengthy professional career.

The name “Mr. Irrelevant” arose in 1976, when former Southern California and NFL receiver Paul Salata founded “Irrelevant Week” in Newport Beach, Cal. Each year’s last pick in the NFL draft now gets a weeklong vacation in Newport Beach and even receives the Lowsman Trophy — a trophy mimicking the Heisman that has a player fumbling a football.

Obviously, the NHL offers no such vacation for the final pick. This year, the B’s did the honors and grabbed defenseman Zach Trotman from Lake Superior State. History isn’t on Trotman’s side as just a few Mr. Irrelevant’s have made an appearance in an NHL game, let alone solidify a career.
