Jack LaLanne Passes Away at 96 Years Old After Decades of Being Face of Fitness

Jack LaLanne, a fitness pioneer who began promoting healthy lifestyles as a teenager in the 1930s and through his fitness show that aired through the 1950s-70s, passed away over the weekend in California at 96 years old.

Known for his chiseled arms, popular Power Juicer machine and freakish feats of strength (that included swimming from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco — handcuffed, shackled and towing a boat — at the age of 60), LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia on Sunday.

LaLanne worked out every day until his death, according to his agent, Rick Hersh. In 2006, LaLanne even joked that “I can’t afford to die. It would wreck my image.”

In honor of LaLanne, I encourage everyone out there and run a few miles, drop down and give yourself 20, or simply chug a delicious glass of carrot juice.

LaLanne performed more than 1,000 push-ups in 23 minutes at age 43. How many can you do in that span? Share your well-wishes, thoughts and prayers to the LaLanne family in the comments section below.

Quote of the day
