Gonzalez will be encouraged to take a day off Wednesday but will have the option of continuing to take his cuts, according to manager Terry Francona. The Red Sox' first baseman has only been swinging off the tee. He took 20 swings Monday after he was medically cleared to begin.
The 28-year-old Gonzalez underwent surgery on his right shoulder back in October. He was not expected to be able to swing until the end of February but was given the OK after Red Sox trainers found him to have "full range of motion, no tenderness and excellent strength."
In all likelihood, Gonzalez will not appear in an actual spring training game until the second week of March, or thereabouts.
