A decade or so after baseball was loaded with talented, young shortstops putting up huge numbers, the position is rather scarce in terms of star power.
There are a few old guards still ranking among the elites and a handful of young shortstops offering some promise for the future, but it’s nothing like it was when Alex Rodriguez, Nomar Garciaparra, Derek Jeter, Miguel Tejada and others ruled the landscape.
Still, there are a few intriguing names to highlight on our latest top 10 list. With all due respect to Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro (needs to survive the sophomore slump), Atlanta’s Alex Gonzalez (overrated glove, inconsistent bat) and Washington’s Ian Desmond (cut down on the Ks, bump up the walks, then come back to me), here are the 10 shortstops we would want to begin the 2011 season.
