Brian Cashman Says Yankees Not Pursuing Pitcher Oliver Perez
Red Sox fans hoping to see Oliver Perez self-destructing on a Yankee Stadium mound will be disappointed to hear that the Yankees are not pursuing the left-hander.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told MLB.com's Byran Hoch that acquiring the recently released Perez is not something the Yanks are interested in doing noting that it's "not something that makes sense for us."
The Yankees were rumored to have some initial interest in signing the left-hander after he was released by the Mets on Monday, but not surprisingly, they have had second thoughts on such an idea.
Perez struggled mightily with his command this spring before the Mets found it more advantageous to wear the $12 million owed to Perez and release him, rather than find a spot for him either in the rotation or the bullpen.
The Yankees, who have made it no secret that they desire more pitching depth are pleasantly surprised with the contributions they've gotten from Ivan Nova and Bartolo Colon this spring. That means that any interest in Perez for the Yankees would likely come in regards to bullpen help, but New York already has some left-handed depth in the pen with Pedro Feliciano and Boone Logan.
