In the four years of the event, two games have been held at baseball parks and two games have been held at football stadiums, showing an openness on the part of the NHL when it comes to determining the host venue.
The Winter Classic was played at Fenway Park in 2010, with the Bruins defeating the Flyers 2-1 in overtime. The Flyers will now host the event in 2012, with the game being played between the Flyers and an opponent to be determined at Citizen's Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Before the old Yankee Stadium was demolished, there was always a lot of debate as to whether the ballpark would host the annual event. Plans never came to fruition, though, and the event was held at other historical ballparks — Fenway Park and Wrigley Field — instead.
As the new Yankee Stadium hosts its third season of baseball action, there's plenty of debate as to whether the ballpark should host a Winter Classic.
While it might be a long ways away from gaining the aura that the house that Ruth built possessed, the relatively new facility has already played host to a number of non-baseball events, including an Army-Notre Dame football game and a Jay-Z and Eminem concert.
But is the Winter Classic on deck for Yankee Stadium? It's been discussed, but only time will tell if it actually gets arranged.
