When it comes to sports, it's not uncommon for parents to go a bit overboard. They'll scream and yell during games, whine to coaches about playing time and maybe even sue an entire league because their kid got cut from a team.
Very rarely, though, does a parent pull his or her kid from a game — especially when he or she isn't actually the team's coach.
But that's precisely what happened when the Southern Phenoms' Devonta Pollard, a consensus top 20 basketball prospect in the 2012 class, made a couple of errors during a recent AAU tournament game.
"He had made two mistakes. It's hard to play a whole ball game, so I had to take him out to calm him down," his mother, Jessie Pollard, said of the incident.
This might not have been a big deal for Devonta Pollard if coaches from Georgetown, UConn, Texas and Kentucky — among other top colleges — weren't in attendance that day. Or if the exchange wasn't caught entirely on film.
