Think it's hot in Boston? Look on the bright side. At least it's not Chicago — where meteorologists say it feels like 108 degrees Wednesday — and it's definitely not Phoenix in 1972.

It was so hot then that Gary Matthews, playing in Triple-A in the San Francisco Giants organization, took measures to keep his car from overheating.

Those measures backfired.

"I left my windows down and they stole my eight-track … player and all my eight tracks. Then I put the windows up the next day and it was so hot the dashboard cracked," Matthews told Ryan Lawrence of the Delaware County Daily Times.

A little heat didn't slow down Matthews, however. He batted .313 and slugged 21 home runs in 136 games that season and was called up late in the year for the start of what would be a 16-season All-Star career.
