On the court, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were competitive rivals. Off the court, the two were good friends. During Bird’s retirement ceremony in 1993, Magic showed up wearing a C’s jersey and famously remarked, “Larry, you only told me one lie. You said there will be another Larry Bird. Larry, there will never, ever be another Larry Bird.” The Garden was packed full for the event.
