Oscar De La Hoya Calls Floyd Mayweather Knockout of Victor Ortiz ‘Bad Sportsmanship,’ to Push for Rematch

Oscar De La Hoya cast his vote in the ongoing Floyd Mayweather controversy, opining that both Mayweather and Victor Ortiz showed poor sportsmanship and that he would push for a rematch.

That rematch, of course, would be promoted by De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, of which Ortiz as a client.

"First of all, I have to say that both Victor Ortiz and Floyd Mayweather looked good," De La Hoya told RingTV. "No doubt about that. Ortiz's foul of headbutting Floyd was uncalled for and there is no excuse for it. If I was the ref, I would have deducted two points.

"But what Mayweather did was bad sportsmanship. The referee, Joe Cortez, I don't know what was going through his head. He fell asleep during the fight."

De La Hoya went on to say Cortez did not say "Time in," even though it should have been clear to anyone watching the fourth round that Cortez separated the fighters and then backed away in a manner that has signaled "time in" for pretty much every other bout ever fought.

Ortiz still should have been on his guard, though, De La Hoya added.

As any good promoter must, De La Hoya pumped up his fighter in the interview while discussing a potential rematch.

"I'm going to talk to Victor after things cool down, but he's going to want a rematch with Mayweather, and that's the bottom line," De La Hoya said. "It's not fair to go out like that."

Most boxing fans hope that if a Mayweather-Ortiz rematch does occur, it doesn't come before the showdown between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao they have been clamoring for.
