Charlie Manuel Says He Would Have Shot Busch Stadium Squirrel If He Had His Gun

For the second time in as many games, a squirrel ran onto the field at Busch Stadium in St. Louis causing a few humorous reactions.

The squirrel fascinated the crowd in Game 3 on Tuesday. The critter became so big that naturally, it showed up on Twitter. The Twitter account @BuschSquirrel showed up after the original incident.

The squirrel returned in the fifth inning, running across the home plate area. Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt claimed after the game that he was distracted and admitted a little bit of confusion as to what the protocol was for vermin on the field.

"I didn't want to stop in the middle of my motion, so I threw it," Oswalt said, according to The Associated Press. "I was wondering what size of animal it needed to be for it not to be a pitch."

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel's reaction, though, may take the cake. The veteran manager hails from West Virginia, and he had his own idea on how to solve the problem. 

"Of course, being from the South and being a squirrel hunter, if I had a gun there, might have done something," he said. "I'm a pretty good shot."

Luckily for the squirrel, Major League Baseball has a pretty strict anti-firearm in the dugout policy.
